What Is Retired Monstrology?
This is a term for items that are no longer available in-game. They can be obtained through trading, but the items can't be created through the tome anymore. There are three main reasons this can happen.
Reason One is in the case of Boss Expels. Boss Rank Creatures are not supposed to have expels - However, sometimes Kingsisle will make a mistake and include them in the Monstrology Tome. When they realize their mistake, they remove them - Therefore retiring that expel. Examples include the Bane Wyrm, Doomsday Krok's Cybermanders, the Greggor Bosses, and the Hangriest Gobbler, as well as many others.
Reason Two is if the creature isn't repeatable, or available to everyone - Like in the event of spell quests, or monsters in instances that you cannot enter again once you complete them in the main story. In these instances, the entire monster, and ALL of it's items will be retired when Kingsisle notices a creature breaks the rules of the Monstrology Tome. Examples of this include Skurkis Screaming Moon (Rank 12), Panoptes, the Spiral Geographic Questline Creatures, and many more.
Reason Three are summoned creatures. Creatures that only exist when summoned by another creature in battle aren't meant to exist in the monstrology tome. Creatures like this that were retired for this reason include the Echoes of Apep, the MacLife, MacDeath and MacStorm Understudies, and many others.
The fact that the items can no longer be created make them exceedingly rare collector's items, and more valuable across the community than an ordinary monstrological item. Obviously, we don't have all retired items available for sale - There are too many, and they're too rare. However, we do list whatever we have available for sale on our Retired Shop Page. Access it from the homepage or the Explore Tab, under "Other Services".
You can see a full list of Retired Creatures on the Value Guide, on the "Retired Monstrology" tab.
